This images depicts Marian Anderson, contralto and former Rosenwald fellow, singing to a desegregated audience of over 75,000 people at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington. The historic event took place on April 9, 1939 as a response to the Daughters of the American Revolution's refusal to allow her to perform at Constitution Hall on account of her race.
